What a Hakone day trip from Tokyo really costs

There are three ways to pay for a day in Hakone, and they are not close to each other. You can buy every leg as a separate ticket. You can buy the Hakone Freepass and ride whatever you like. Or you can pay one price and let somebody else drive. I have set all three out below using only fares I could verify, and I have named the two legs I could not price rather than quietly rounding them in. Any page that hands you one tidy total for the loop has not priced them either.

First cost: getting there

Start with the correction that saves people the most money. There is no Shinkansen station in Hakone. The nearest is Odawara, and you change there. So the bullet train is not a shortcut to Hakone, it is a shortcut to a connection.

The Odakyu Romancecar runs direct from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto, seated and reserved, for a base fare of ¥1,270 plus a ¥1,200 limited-express surcharge. That is ¥2,470, and it takes about 75 to 90 minutes. Frequency is roughly one to two trains an hour, more at peak, and I am not going to pretend I can give you a timetable.

An ordinary Odakyu train on the same line costs the ¥1,270 base fare with no surcharge, takes about two hours, and normally means changing at Odawara. It is the cheapest way in and it is perfectly comfortable outside rush hour.

The Shinkansen to Odawara is ¥3,280 unreserved, made up of a ¥1,520 base fare and a ¥1,760 unreserved limited-express charge, or ¥3,610 with a reserved seat. Kodama services stop at Odawara and some Hikari do; Nozomi does not stop at all. The ride is roughly 27 to 40 minutes depending on which service you catch. Then Odawara to Hakone-Yumoto on the Hakone Tozan Line is ¥360 and about 14 minutes. Call it ¥3,640 with a change in the middle. Way one: buy every leg separately

These are the fares inside Hakone that I could verify against a primary source, all current since the revision of 1 October 2025:

Add the five legs of a straightforward round trip — train out, Tozan to Gora, ropeway one way, cruise, train home — and you get about ¥6,700. That number is incomplete on purpose. It does not include the Gora to Sounzan cable car, and it does not include the bus back around the lake to Hakone-Yumoto. I could not verify either fare from a source I trust, and I would rather tell you that than invent them. Both are real legs of the loop, so your true ticket total is higher than ¥6,700 by an amount I cannot give you.

Way two: the Hakone Freepass

The pass from Shinjuku is ¥7,100 adult and ¥1,600 child for two days, or ¥7,500 and ¥1,850 for three. There is no one-day version. Those prices went up on 1 October 2025, when the two-day pass moved from ¥6,100, which is why so many blogs are quoting numbers that no longer exist.

It covers the round trip from Shinjuku to Odawara plus unlimited rides on eight systems inside Hakone, and discounts at more than 70 sightseeing facilities. It does not cover the Romancecar surcharge, which stays at ¥1,200 adult and ¥600 child each way. Collect the voucher at the Odakyu Sightseeing Service Center on the west side of Shinjuku, B1 of the Odakyu Line station west exit, in front of the ticket gate, open 8:00 to 18:00. Whether it pays back inside a single day is the whole argument of this page, and it is tighter than you would think.

Way three: pay once and be driven

Coach tours from Tokyo run from ¥7,800 for the best-rated of the eight, through ¥8,640 for the most-booked, ¥14,400 for one that adds hotel pickup, ¥18,160 and ¥24,000 for the two that send you home on the Shinkansen from Odawara. A private day costs ¥38,499 per person and starts in Hakone, with travel from Tokyo not included.

Compare that honestly against doing it yourself. The pass is ¥7,100 and buys you Hakone only. The ¥24,000 tour buys you Hakone, Mt. The costs people forget

Cash, first. Two of the coach tours sell the Lake Ashi cruise as an on-the-day extra of about ¥1,700, and LeVan, reviewing the most-booked one, had to leave the group and find an ATM to pay for it. Lunch is excluded on most of these tours. And the cost nobody prices at all is a bad weather day: the ropeway suspends in high wind and the cruise changes route or stops in fog, and a ¥7,100 pass buys you nothing on a day when the two things it exists for are shut. Check the status at Hakone Navi before you leave Tokyo, not when you arrive at Sounzan.

Insider tip

If you are travelling as a couple or a family, do the arithmetic per person before you buy anything. The child Freepass is ¥1,600 against ¥7,100 for an adult, which shifts the answer hard for families. A single IC card cannot be shared between two people through a gate either, so buy separately.
